Practitioner Series: Jason McCue on Lawfare— Human Rights Litigation

On Wednesday, 25 January 2023, CGHR had its first Practitioner Series of the year with Jason McCue. Jason is an esteemed human rights lawyer, voted U.K. Law Society’s lawyer of the year in 2010, who specialises in state, private, hybrid and civil society lawfare (the use of law to gain strategic advantages). Hosted by Sharath, Jason gave insights and reflections on his career thus far, initially studying in London, moving from commercial law to human rights litigation working across a range of affairs from conflict resolution and transitional justice to advising numerous heads of state and international bodies, including the UN.

Jason also discussed his work orchestrating and managing some of the largest victim-led justice  class actions which started with cases against the IRA and recently included representing the victims of Rohingya genocide against Facebook. Equally, among roles as facilitator to the joint UN/AU Darfur Peace Process and advisory work on transitional justice to the Transitional Government of Libya, Jason recently founded Ukraine Justice Alliance to provide legal resources to the Ukrainian people and leading the Ukrainian Government backed civil society lawfare programme. This was a fantastic evening for all who attended and CGHR.
