Centre of Governance & Human Rights (CGHR)

 

After a pandemic hiatus, the CGHR Student group is coming back. We are fortunate to have an engaged student community from across the university. This is headed by our Student Group, which plays a central role in coordinating events, publicity and outreach. Each year, the Student Group makes a crucial and often inspired contribution to CGHR's work, bringing fresh ideas and helping to open up new directions for CGHR activities.  These are volunteer roles, but the student group receives administrative and financial support from CGHR for activities of their own design, ranging from workshops on issues related to governance and human rights to publications featuring practitioners.

Role Descriptions, CGHR Student Group

Student Group Coordinator

The SG Coordinator ensures the strong and successful function of the SG as a whole. The role requires excellent organisational skills and a commitment to form the backbone of the group. Most importantly, the SG Coordinator coordinates the SG's intellectual and practical aims and maintains momentum and interests throughout the academic year as well as a productive, enjoyable and collaborative environment for the students working with CGHR.

The SG Coordinator should be prepared to commit around 4-6 hours a week for a full academic year. This position is more suitable for graduate students. 

Responsibilities

  • The smooth running of the SG. 
  • Acting as an intermediary between the CGHR administrator and SG. 
  • Managing the work plan and ensuring all activities and actions are being carried out as agreed. 
  • Conducting any necessary administration and practical procedures, including organising and chairing regular SG meetings. 
  • Supporting recruitment and planning for the SG for the academic year. 
  • Developing new ideas, events and initiatives for CGHR alongside the SG and the CGHR co-directors. 

Essential skills/qualities

  • Highly organised and able to coordinate and motivate others. 
  • Able and willing to commit the time and energy to supporting and growing the SG. 
  • Hardworking, able to work on own initiative and see projects through to completion. 
  • Demonstrable interest in human rights, international affairs or other relevant areas. 
  • Previous experience with project management would be useful but not essential.

 

Events Officers (2 Posts) 

The Events Officers are responsible for coordinating a range of CGHR public events, conferences and ad hoc events as well as student-focused activities and workshops. The Events Officers are responsible for ensuring that all CGHR events are of the highest quality. 

The Events Officers should be prepared to commit around 2-3 hours/per week for a full academic year. There are two Events Officer posts, so the responsibilities of the role can be delegated between the two. The role is suitable for both undergraduate and graduate students. 

 Responsibilities

  • Liaising with CGHR Administrator and the SG Coordinator to help arrange events. 
  • Helping navigate the post-COVID world of events (events will still be remote during Michaelmas term but may transition to in-person in Lent term) 
  • Managing speaker arrangements and liaising with the speaker, including transport, accommodation, arrival, expense claims etc. 
  • Organising and facilitating practical aspects of events such as the timely set up of Eventbrite and Zoom for remote events and/or room booking, facilities and set-up, and coordinating AV requirements if the event is in-person. 
  • Supporting the Publicity Officer and Outreach Officer in event publicity. 
  • Attending the event to ensure everything runs smoothly. 
  • Working with the SG to ensure any event recordings are edited and made available. 
  • Supporting any post-event reports, etc.

  • Highly organised and able to work with other people and groups with an eye for detail and layout. 
  • Able and willing to commit the time and energy to supporting and growing the CGHR SG. 
  • Hardworking, able to work on own initiative and see projects through to completion. 
  • Demonstrable interest in human rights, international affairs or other relevant areas. 
  • Previous experience organizing events would be useful but not essential. 

 

Publicity Officer

The Publicity Officer will work to ensure a systematic, effective and professional approach to how the CGHR presents itself to stakeholders within and outside of the University. The Publicity Officer is primarily concerned with creating publicity materials for events and activities. 

The Publicity and Outreach Officer posts should be prepared to commit around 4 hours per week for a full academic year. 

Responsibilities

  • Designing and creating posters, flyers and imagery to advertise and promote events and activities.
  • Managing and developing promotional networks, in liaison with the SG in order to ensure that the right information gets out at the right time to the right people. 
  • Supporting CGHR and the SG in developing visual content for the website. 

Essential skills/qualities

  • Highly organised and able to work with other people and groups. 
  • Able and willing to commit the time and energy to supporting and growing the CGHR SG.
  • Hardworking, able to work on own initiative and see projects through to completion. 
  • Demonstrable interest in human rights, international affairs or other relevant areas. 
  • Previous experience working with publicity and social media would be useful but not essential.
  • Experience or interest in graphic design particularly in the creation of promotional materials. 

 

Blog and Website Content Editor

The Blog and Website Content Editor is responsible for organising, editing and producing engaging and original content for the CGHR website. This involves turning research materials and ideas produced by CGHR associates into accessible blog pieces as well as searching for new submissions in line with CGHR's core research themes. 

The Blog and Website Content Editor should be prepared to commit 4 hours a week for a full academic year. 

Responsibilities 

  • Liaising with the CGHR Co-director and Associates to establish themes and schedule for submissions. 
  • Editing the published work of CGHR Research Associates into accessible blog pieces, as well as contacting them for works in progress, speeches and other material that can be turned into original and engaging content. 
  • Searching for new submissions from capable and experienced writers, both within the academic community and beyond, on issues of human rights and governance. 
  • Editing content to create polished and accessible blog posts. 
  • Working with Outreach and Publicity Officers to increase the reach and impact of blog posts. 

Essential skills/qualities

  • Some experience in writing and editing. 
  • Able and willing to commit the time and energy into supporting and growing the CGHR SG. 
  • Hardworking, able to work to own initiative and see projects through to completion. 
  • Demonstrable interest in human rights, international affairs or other relevant areas.
