In this seminar, objectives, instruments, actors, dynamics and political (ab)uses of the transitional justice policies and mechanisms employed in Rwanda and Burundi will be explored and compared. As part of their processes of political transition, both countries have been confronted with the challenge of transitional justice: How to come to terms with a past marked by human rights atrocities. Despite a number of apparent similarities, both countries have adopted remarkably different approaches in dealing with their respective pasts. The seminar will feature Dr Phil Clark (Oxford) and Dr Antje du Bois-Pedain (Cambridge).
