Ashwin gives research talk at King’s College on discretion in algorithmic policing
In November, CGHR Postdoctoral Scholar Ashwin Varghese gave a research talk titled “Discretion in Algorithmic Policing: Facial-Recognition Technology and the Politics of ‘Better Decision-Making’ in Kerala” at King’s College, Cambridge.
The talk examined the incorporation of an indigenously developed AI facial recognition software-enabled image search function in everyday policing in the State of Kerala in Southwest India.
Over the past five years, Kerala has integrated AI into state servies, including policing. Drawing on research conducted in Kerala between May 2024 and March 2025, Ashwin outlined the narratives, desires and imaginaries that drive AI integration in Kerala police. Engaging with theories of algorithmic governance and discretion, he analysed how the dominant narratives of algorithmic systems as tools for ‘better decision-making’ are reshaping the discretionary authority of state personnel.
