On 12 February 2025, CGHR had the great pleasure of inviting Dr Matthew Gillett to give the second of this year’s CGHR Practitioner Series talks.
Dr Gillett was appointed as a United Nations Special Mandate Holder in 2022, serving as the Expert Member for the Western Europe and Others Group in the Human Rights Council’s Working Group on Arbitrary Detention. As part of the Working Group, he reviews 80-90 judgements annually and also conducts country visits to assess detention practices globally.
Before this, Dr Gillett spent 15 years prosecuting international crimes cases in the Hague. Academically, he writes on Ecocide, Human Rights, Speech Crimes and International Criminal Law. In 2022, he published his monograph “Prosecuting Environmental Harm before the International Criminal Court” (CUP), and has won multiple awards for his research.
