On 5th November 2024, our Postdoctoral Scholar Dr Ashwin Varghese was invited to present at the Crime Research Centre Research Seminar at the University of Sussex.
The state of Kerala, in southern India, through its e-governance programme, has laid out elaborate plans for the integration of everyday state services with algorithmic infrastructures. Crucial to this project is the digitalisation of policing in the state. In this talk, I analyse the ongoing integration of algorithmic infrastructures in Kerala’s policing in relation to the Kerala model, to unpack what the contemporary transition to e-governance wishes to modify and/or replace. Highlighting the inherent tendencies of algorithmic systems and their challenges, he asked whether Kerala’s adoption of algorithmic infrastructure may offer an alternative vision of algorithmic governance.
