The COVID-19-related crisis of seafarers and its potential long-term consequences for Maritime Security
About the project:
In September 2020, UN agencies reported that nearly 800,000 seafarers around the world had been unable to disembark and embark ships due to governmental COVID-19 regulations. The situation has been deemed a ‘humanitarian crisis’. As of January 2021, the International Labour Organization reports that 400,000 seafarers are still stranded.
The aim of this project is to investigate and identify potential long-term effects of the Covid crisis with regards to different domains of Maritime Security, namely human security, marine safety, blue economy and national security.
