Global Experiences of Algorithmic Governance
Theme lead: Dr Ashwin Varghese
CGHR’s Global Experiences of Algorithmic Governance theme draws attention to lived realities around the world of algorithmic governance, to how agency and discretion manifest in algorithmic systems, and to how people talk back to algorithmic domination. As with our other themes, this theme fosters dialogue between academics, practitioners, policy makers, activists, and technologists. Through workshops, talks, conferences, research and praxis-based projects, the theme especially focuses on creating avenues to amplify knowledge about the variable global experiences of algorithmic governance, highlighting the role of agency and discretion of participants.
The theme is a space for alternative, collaborative imaginaries of digital governance; building counter discourses to the ‘inevitability’ of AI; and forging solidarities through systemic resistance to algorithmic domination. Specifically, the theme aims to inform public policy pertaining to algorithmic governance and advocate for the democratisation of the public policy decision-making processes such that they are more mindful of the differential experiences and impacts of algorithmic governance.
