In a landmark new report, Amnesty International warns that those responsible for crimes against humanity committed to brutally crush nationwide protests during the Woman Life Freedom uprising in 2022 continue to control Iran’s deadly state machinery of repression today.
The monumental report, more than 1,000 pages long, was produced analysing a colossal amount of digital evidence. 2000 videos were analysed, most of them with the help of Amnesty International’s network of university students trained in digital fact-finding, assisted in the discovery and verification of videos (DVC), with final analysis conducted and reviewed by Amnesty International staff. Students from the University of Cambridge (UK), the University of Essex (UK), the University of California, Berkeley (USA), the Ibero American University (Mexico), Bard College Berlin (Germany), the Hertie School of Governance (Germany) and the Geneva Academy of International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights (Switzerland) are credited in the report for their contributions to the investigation.
The report details how Iranian authorities committed crimes against humanity in order to crush the uprising. It also documents deadly protest repression operations and command structures, calling for an international criminal justice mechanism to ensure authorities responsible for crimes against humanity are held to account and to deter further atrocities.
