Led by Holly Sheridan, Gabriel Velazquez-Ruiz and Michelle Cisneros, the Student Group has been very active in Michaelmas and is now gearing up towards its Lent Term activities. They are currently working on a research project assessing the impact of AI technologies on the surveillance and policing of protest groups between 2019 and 2023. Students are now in the process of conducting research on cases in Iran, the UK, China, and Palestine. They are also analysing quantitative and qualitative data from international organisations with specialist remits in the area, bringing together this specialist research with regional mechanisms and local investigative pieces to address the question. In Lent term, the Student Group will have fortnightly meetings to discuss the findings of their research and will be drafting a report to be published on the CGHR website.
The Student Group is also busy organising knowledge-sharing sessions with experts on surveillance in different countries around the globe. They had one such session last term with Dr Aakansha Natani, of the International Institute of Information Technology, Hyderabad, who shared her research on the processes and consequences of AI surveillance in India and beyond. By learning from and collaborating with the DVC, the Student Group is looking forward to further developing their verification skills— transferable to their present report.
